The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Dr Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, has advocated for the deployment of modern technology in the fight against insurgency and banditry in the country.
Ganduje made the call on Wednesday in Damaturu during a sympathy visit to Yobe State Governor, Mai Mala Buni, over the recent attack on a military formation in the state.
He said the persistent attacks by insurgents and bandits had diverted the attention of leaders and consumed resources meant for development.
“The fight against insurgency and banditry must move with the realities of time to succeed.
“Resources meant for development are now being used to replace equipment destroyed in such attacks.
“Your attention as a leader is now distracted and slowing down the pace of developmental programmes,” he said.
Responding, Buni said that governments at all levels were considering the integration of modern technology in addressing the security challenges.
He said the Lake Chad Basin Governors’ Forum was studying the use of drones and other technologies by insurgents and exploring ways to collaborate with security agencies.
“We are carefully analysing the use of drones by the enemy to enable us work with security agencies to check the menace,” the governor said.
He added that the matter would be escalated to the federal level for a more coordinated response.
“This is a national problem. When military formations are attacked and arms are carted away, there is no telling where those weapons may be used.
“These attacks should, therefore, be seen as attacks on the nation,” he said.
The APC national chairman was accompanied on the visit by members of the party’s National Working Committee.
