Yobe Govt Reopens Two Weekly Markets Amid Improved Security

The Yobe State Government has approved the reopening of two weekly markets earlier closed due to security concerns, following a review of the security situation in the affected areas.

This was disclosed on Wednesday by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Security Matters, Brig.-Gen. Abdulsalam Dahiru (Rtd), while briefing journalists after a security meeting chaired by the Deputy Governor, Hon. Idi Barde Gubana, in Damaturu.

Dahiru said the reopened markets—Buni Yadi and Kukareta—were among three markets (including Katarko) earlier shut down as part of proactive measures to safeguard lives amid renewed counter-insurgency operations.

“The decision to reopen the markets followed improved security reports and close collaboration between the state government and security agencies,” he stated.

According to him, Buni Yadi market resumed operations last Friday, while Kukareta market reopened on Wednesday.

“You may recall that some weeks ago, the state government ordered the temporary closure of three weekly markets over security concerns. I am pleased to inform you that as of this morning, two of the markets are now operational,” Dahiru said.

He assured the public that security personnel remain vigilant and are working round-the-clock to sustain peace and stability across Yobe State.

The reopening of the markets is expected to boost local trade and economic activities, particularly for rural communities that depend on the weekly markets for livelihood.
