The management of Yobe State University has clarified the circumstances surrounding a viral photograph showing some students sleeping outdoors within the institution’s premises.
In a statement issued by the university’s Digital and Strategic Communications unit, the management acknowledged that the image circulating on social media is authentic but stressed that it does not indicate a widespread accommodation crisis.
According to the statement, the situation resulted from temporary disruptions caused by ongoing hostel renovation and facility upgrade projects across the campus.
The university explained that several hostels are currently undergoing comprehensive refurbishment aimed at improving students’ living conditions, leading to a short-term reduction in available bed spaces.
Management also noted that the prevailing heat season contributed to some students choosing to stay outdoors at night for comfort.
The Dean of Student Affairs, Prof. Sani Isa, confirmed that hostel allocation processes are ongoing, with deliberate measures being taken to ensure affected students are accommodated as quickly as possible.
He added that steps were also being implemented to decongest hostels, particularly high-demand facilities such as the Abuja Hostel.
The university reassured students, parents and the general public that the situation was under control and being actively addressed.
“No student has been abandoned, and every effort is being made to ensure safe and adequate accommodation for all,” the statement said.
Management urged the public to disregard misleading interpretations of the image and rely on official communication channels for accurate information.
It reaffirmed that the university, under the administration of Mai Mala Buni, remained committed to the welfare, safety and academic success of its students, while appreciating the patience and understanding of the university community.
