The Chief Magistrate Court I in Yola, Adamawa State, has ordered the remand of a businessman, Mamuda Duma, for allegedly engaging in an extra-marital affair with a housewife and procuring the abortion of her three-month-old pregnancy.
The remand order was issued on Monday after the defendant was arraigned on a direct criminal complaint filed by the woman’s husband, Ahmadu Lawal of Yola town, Yola South Local Government Area.
Lawal alleged that Duma, who resides at Wurojabbe, had maintained a relationship with his wife despite repeated warnings. He told the court that the defendant had persuaded his wife to abort the pregnancy, after which he reported the matter to the Police Headquarters in Yola.
According to the complaint, the defendant and some friends had pleaded with him to withdraw the case, promising to end the relationship. However, Lawal said the defendant continued contacting his wife, adding that he recorded telephone conversations between them.
He argued that the actions of the defendant amounted to “enticing and abortion,” contrary to Sections 315 and 203 of the Adamawa State Penal Code Law 2018.
When the complaint was read in court following an application by counsel to the complainant, Ibrahim Hamman Gurin, the defendant pleaded not guilty to the charges.
H. I. Ibrahim appeared as defence counsel.
The presiding Chief Magistrate, Muhammed Njidda, ordered that the accused be remanded in prison custody and adjourned the case to Sept. 1, 2025, for commencement of trial.
