A young woman in Gubio Local Government Area of Borno State has reportedly taken her own life after she was allegedly forced by her father to marry one of his friends.
Sources in the area told Insight Northeast that the tragic incident occurred around 6:20 p.m. on Sunday, following days of emotional distress suffered by the victim, who had repeatedly expressed her unwillingness to proceed with the arranged marriage.
A local child protection volunteer, Bukar Fantami Gubio, who confirmed the incident, described it as deeply unfortunate and preventable.
He said the deceased had made it clear to her family that she did not want to marry the man chosen for her, explaining that she was in love with another person of her choice.
“The emotional pain and pressure she went through as a result of this forced marriage pushed her into taking her own life. It is truly a sad situation that calls for urgent action,” Gubio said.
He called on human rights organisations, law enforcement agencies, and relevant government bodies to conduct a thorough investigation into the incident and ensure that justice is served.
Gubio also urged parents and community leaders to respect the rights and choices of young women in marriage decisions, warning that forced marriage is a serious violation of human rights and often leads to devastating consequences.
“This tragedy is a reminder of the urgent need to protect the rights, freedom, and dignity of young women against all forms of abuse and coercion,” he said.
As of the time of filing this report, the Borno State Police Command and state government were yet to officially comment on the incident.
