Zulum Appoints Women to Chair All Nursing Colleges’ Governing Councils in Borno

Babagana Umara Zulum has approved the appointment of three women as chairmen of the Governing Councils of the state’s Colleges of Nursing Sciences in Maiduguri, Gwoza and Monguno.

The governor appointed Dr Mairo Mandara as Chairman of the Governing Council, College of Nursing Sciences, Gwoza; Hajiya Hauwa Mustapha as Chairman of the Governing Council, College of Nursing Sciences, Maiduguri; and Rukaiya Shettima Kamfut as Chairman of the Governing Council, College of Nursing Sciences, Monguno.

With the appointments, women now chair all the governing councils of the three nursing colleges established by the state government.

A statement issued by the governor’s spokesman, Dauda Iliya, said the appointments were in line with the provisions of the laws enacted by the Borno State House of Assembly establishing the institutions, which mandate the constitution of a Governing Council for each college.

According to the statement, Zulum approved the appointments based on the nominees’ proven integrity in public service, sound educational background and demonstrated commitment to community development.

It explained that each Governing Council comprises a chairman and seven other members.

Four of the members are statutory, including the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Health and Human Services; the Director of Nursing Services, Ministry of Health; the Provost of the respective college; and the Registrar, who serves as Secretary of the Council.

The remaining three members represent community interests and are drawn from Borno Central, Borno North and Borno South senatorial districts.

For the College of Nursing Sciences, Gwoza, members include the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Health and Human Services; Director of Nursing Services; the Provost; Shettima Abdulazeez (Borno Central); Kaka Ali (Borno North); and Mamman Wakili Walama (Borno South), with the Registrar serving as Secretary.

At the College of Nursing Sciences, Maiduguri, members are the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Health and Human Services; Director of Nursing Services; the Provost; Loskuri Gana Grema (Borno Central); Shuwaram Lawan Kabu (Borno South); and Babagana Bulama (Borno North), with the Registrar as Secretary.

For the College of Nursing Sciences, Monguno, members include the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Health and Human Services; Director of Nursing Services; the Provost; Mohammed Bukar Badiya (Borno Central); Musa Ahmadu (Borno North); and Adamu Abdu Balbaya (Borno South), while the Registrar serves as Secretary.

The statement noted that the inauguration of the councils is expected to strengthen institutional governance and enhance effective management of the colleges as part of the state government’s efforts to boost healthcare manpower development in the state.
