Zulum Builds Africa’s Largest EV Charging Terminal In Maiduguri

Gov. Babagana Umara Zulum of Borno has inaugurated the construction of what is described as Africa’s largest electric vehicle (EV) charging terminal in Maiduguri.

The project, located opposite the Federal Secretariat, forms part of the state government’s efforts to modernise transportation, promote clean energy and create new economic opportunities.

Zulum said the initiative was not only about building infrastructure but about advancing a vision that integrates climate action with poverty reduction and sustainable development.

“Our administration is adopting innovative solutions that solve multiple challenges at once. By investing in electric mobility, we are addressing transportation needs, reducing environmental pollution and opening up new jobs and businesses for our people,’’ he said.

The governor added that the EV terminal would serve as a model for other states in Nigeria, positioning Borno as a pioneer in green transportation and renewable energy adoption.

He explained that the project was aligned with global climate goals and Nigeria’s national energy transition plan, noting that Borno intended to lead by example in the fight against climate change.

Officials said the charging facility would cater to both private and public transport systems, with provisions for future expansion into neighbouring states.
