Gov. Babagana Zulum of Borno has directed the Ministry of Education to introduce technical and vocational education in Sangaya schools to benefit Almajiri pupils across the state.
Zulum gave the directive on Monday in Maiduguri while receiving the report on repositioning technical and vocational education in Borno.
The governor said the measure was aimed at empowering Almajiri pupils with modern skills that would prepare them for future employment opportunities, alongside their religious education.
“I am happy to note that the Executive Secretary of the Sangaya Education Board is here. I have instructed the Commissioner of Education to liaise with you to consider introducing technical and vocational education in our Sangaya schools,” Zulum said.
He noted that equipping Almajiri children with vocational skills would not only bridge the gap between education and industry needs, but also reduce poverty and idleness among youths.
Zulum explained that a committee had been constituted to reposition technical and vocational education in the state, stressing that the overall plan was to ensure graduates from both western and religious schools had employable skills.
Earlier, the Chairman of the Committee, Alhaji Goni Ibrahim, said the review was conducted through site visits, stakeholder consultations and comparative studies, with recommendations tailored to meet Borno’s development needs.
The governor also commended the leadership of the Commissioner of Education, Science, Technology and Innovation, Engr. Lawan Abba Wakilbe, for his role in advancing reforms in the sector.
