House of Reps Urges WAEC to Suspend Computer-Based Exam Policy

The House of Representatives has called on the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) to suspend its plan to introduce Computer-Based Examinations (CBE) for the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), citing inadequate infrastructure and poor digital literacy among students across the country.

The resolution followed a motion raised during Thursday’s plenary, where lawmakers expressed concern that the sudden implementation of the policy could marginalize students from rural areas who lack access to computers and stable electricity.

Members of the House argued that before adopting such a policy, WAEC must ensure nationwide readiness, including adequate computer facilities, reliable internet connectivity, and steady power supply.

The lawmakers urged WAEC to conduct extensive stakeholder consultations and pilot testing before implementing the CBE policy. The House also mandated its Committee on Basic Education to engage with the examination body and report back within four weeks.
