Editorial Policy

Insight Northeast Nigeria is committed to journalism that is accurate, fair, independent, and in the public interest. This policy governs how we gather, verify, edit, and publish all content on this platform.

This Editorial Policy applies to all content published on Insight Northeast Nigeria, including news articles, analysis pieces, opinion columns, sponsored content, and social media posts made on behalf of the publication. All staff, contributors, and freelancers are required to read and abide by this policy before publishing any content on this platform.

1. Our Editorial Mission

Insight Northeast Nigeria exists to serve the public interest through independent, accurate, and impactful journalism. Our primary mission is to inform the people of Northeast Nigeria — and a global audience with an interest in Nigerian affairs — through reporting that is grounded in facts, guided by ethics, and accountable to the communities we serve.

We cover breaking news, politics, governance, health, finance, technology, and human interest stories across Adamawa, Borno, Bauchi, Gombe, Taraba, and Yobe States, as well as national and international developments that affect our readers’ lives.

2. Accuracy and Verification

Standard 2.0

Accuracy is the foundation of everything we publish. Every factual claim in a news article must be verified through at least one reliable source before publication. For significant claims — particularly those involving criminal allegations, financial figures, or medical information — we require verification from at least two independent sources.

Our Verification Process Includes:

  • Checking claims against official government records, press releases, and verified documents
  • Seeking direct comment or confirmation from named individuals before publication
  • Cross-referencing breaking news against at least two credible news organizations
  • Using authoritative sources for health and medical content — including the NHS, WHO, CDC, Mayo Clinic, and Nigerian Ministry of Health
  • Using authoritative sources for financial content — including the Central Bank of Nigeria, Nigerian Stock Exchange, and internationally recognized financial institutions

We do not publish unverified rumors or speculative claims as factual news. If information cannot be independently confirmed, we clearly label it as unconfirmed, alleged, or developing.

3. Corrections Policy

Standard 3.0

Insight Northeast Nigeria takes errors seriously. When we publish incorrect information we will correct it promptly, transparently, and prominently. We do not quietly edit articles without acknowledgment.

Our Corrections Process:

  • Minor factual corrections — a correction notice is added to the bottom of the article stating what was changed and when
  • Significant errors — a correction notice is added at the top of the article and shared on our social media platforms
  • Serious inaccuracies — the article may be retracted with a full public explanation of what was wrong and why it was removed

To submit a correction request, contact our editorial team through our Contact Us page with the article URL and a description of the specific inaccuracy. We aim to review all correction requests within 48 hours.

4. Editorial Independence

Standard 4.0

Insight Northeast Nigeria maintains a strict separation between its editorial operations and its commercial activities. No advertiser, sponsor, or external party has any influence over our editorial decisions, story selection, or reporting approach.

  • We do not accept payment in exchange for positive editorial coverage
  • Advertisers are clearly identified as advertisers — their content does not appear as editorial news
  • Sponsored content is clearly labeled as “Sponsored” or “Paid Partnership” in all cases
  • No political party, government agency, or commercial organization directs our news coverage
  • Our editorial team makes all publication decisions independently

5. Fairness and Balance

Standard 5.0

We are committed to presenting all sides of a story fairly. When reporting on disputes, allegations, or controversies, we give all relevant parties the opportunity to respond before publication. If a party declines to comment or cannot be reached, we note this clearly in the article.

We do not allow personal, political, or commercial biases to distort our reporting. Opinion and analysis content is clearly labeled and distinguished from news reporting.

6. Sensitivity and Harm Reduction

Standard 6.0

We follow established guidelines for reporting on sensitive topics including suicide and self-harm, sexual violence, child welfare, and ethnic or religious conflict. We do not publish content that could endanger individuals, inflame communal tensions, or cause unnecessary harm to vulnerable people.

In covering conflict, security, and humanitarian crises in Northeast Nigeria, we take particular care to protect the identity of vulnerable sources and to avoid publishing information that could be used to harm individuals or communities.

7. Source Protection

Standard 7.0

We protect the confidentiality of sources who provide information on a confidential basis. Journalists at Insight Northeast will not reveal the identity of confidential sources except where legally required to do so by a court of competent jurisdiction.

8. Artificial Intelligence and Technology Tools

Standard 8.0

Insight Northeast Nigeria may use artificial intelligence tools to assist with research, drafting, and content optimization. Any content that uses AI assistance is reviewed, edited, and verified by a qualified human editor before publication. We do not publish AI-generated content without human editorial oversight. All factual claims in AI-assisted content are independently verified against authoritative sources.

9. Advertising and Sponsored Content

Standard 9.0

Advertising and sponsored content are clearly separated from our editorial content at all times. Sponsored articles, advertorial content, and paid partnerships are clearly labeled as such. Our advertising relationships — including Google AdSense display advertising — do not influence our editorial decisions, story selection, or reporting.

10. Complaints and Feedback

Standard 10.0

We welcome feedback from readers, subjects of coverage, and members of the public. If you believe we have breached this editorial policy or acted unfairly in our coverage, you may submit a formal complaint through our Contact Us page. We will acknowledge all complaints within 72 hours and aim to resolve them within 14 days.
