TCN Reconnects Taraba to National Grid After Major Transmission Upgrade

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has restored electricity supply to Taraba State, including Jalingo and surrounding areas, following the successful upgrade of the Yola–Mayo Belwa–Jalingo transmission line.

In a statement issued on Wednesday by TCN’s General Manager, Public Affairs, Mrs Ndidi Mbah, the company said full power supply was restored at about 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 13, 2026, after the completion of all required pre-commissioning tests and the mandatory soak period in line with operational standards.

According to the statement, the planned outage, which commenced at about 2:16 p.m. on Jan. 9, 2026, was necessary to enable contractors carry out critical upgrade works on the transmission line.

The works included line stringing from the terminal tower to a newly constructed line bay to allow for the energisation of newly installed 150MVA power transformers at the Jalingo and Mayo Belwa Transmission Substations.

TCN explained that to ensure safe and seamless execution of the project, the Gombe–Yola transmission line was temporarily opened on Jan. 11, 2026, to facilitate line bay extension and transfer works at the Yola Transmission Substation.

The company noted that Yola Electricity Distribution Company (YEDC) is a major beneficiary of the upgrade, which involved the enhancement of the Mayo Belwa and Jalingo Transmission Substations from 132kV to 330kV.

It said the upgrade would significantly improve power reliability, boost transmission capacity and support the growing electricity demand in Taraba State and neighbouring areas.

TCN appreciated electricity consumers for their patience during the outage and reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening the national transmission grid to ensure reliable and efficient power supply across the country.
