Canada has climbed to seventh position in the 2026 global passport rankings, offering its citizens visa-free or simplified travel access to 182 destinations worldwide.
The latest ranking, based on the Henley Passport Index, shows Canada improving from eighth place earlier in the year and moving three positions ahead of the United States, which ranked 10th with access to 179 destinations.
According to the report released in March 2026, the Singapore passport remains the world’s strongest, granting visa-free access to 192 destinations. Japan, South Korea, and the United Arab Emirates share second place with 187 destinations each.
Canada shares the seventh position with several countries including Australia, New Zealand, Czechia, Slovakia, Slovenia, and Latvia, all with a mobility score of 182.
The ranking indicates that Canadian passport holders can enter 182 countries through visa-free travel, visa-on-arrival arrangements, or electronic travel authorization systems. Officials noted that this continued upward trend reinforces the passport’s global strength and international mobility benefits.
European nations continue to dominate the upper tiers of the ranking, with countries such as Sweden holding third place with access to 186 destinations, while several European states, including France, Germany, and Italy, rank closely behind with access to 185 destinations.
The report further noted that Canadian citizens enjoy extensive visa-free access across regions including Europe, Asia, the Americas, Africa, and Oceania. Popular destinations offering visa-free entry to Canadian travellers include Morocco, South Africa, Japan, and Mexico.
However, several countries still require advance visas for Canadian passport holders. These include nations such as Nigeria, Russia, Iran, and Sudan, where travellers must apply through embassy or online visa systems.
Most countries also require passports to remain valid for at least six months before entry, particularly across Asia, Africa, and parts of the Middle East.
The report stated that Canada’s improved ranking reflects sustained diplomatic relations, travel agreements, and stable immigration policies. Analysts added that while strong passport rankings increase travel convenience, travellers are still advised to verify entry requirements, including visa rules and electronic travel authorizations, before departure.
The latest update confirms that the Canadian passport remains one of the world’s most powerful travel documents, offering broad global mobility and competitive advantages compared to many other nationalities.
