A police constable serving with the Borno State Police Command, Mohammed Alhaji Muhammad, has returned the sum of ₦2.6 million that was mistakenly transferred into his bank account.
Muhammad said his action was driven by a desire to uphold integrity and help correct negative public perceptions about the Nigeria Police Force (NPF).
The development was confirmed on Monday by the Borno State Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Nahum Daso.
The constable’s conduct drew public attention after a Facebook user, Bello Jafar, commended him for what he described as an uncommon display of honesty.
“I would like to formally express my appreciation for Mohammed Alhaji Muhammad, a loyal customer of United Bank for Africa (UBA) and a police officer of exceptional integrity,” Jafar wrote on Facebook.
According to him, the police officer received the money in error from a Moniepoint customer and promptly took steps to ensure it was returned to the rightful owner.
Speaking on the matter, the police spokesman said the Commissioner of Police in the state, Naziru Abdulmajeed, invited the constable for a meeting after learning about the incident.
Daso explained that Muhammad, who serves in the Insurance Office of the Borno State Police Command, received the credit alert last Thursday and immediately realised the money was not meant for him.
“When he received the alert on his phone last Thursday, he knew he was not expecting any money.
“The following day, Friday, he sought permission and went straight to his bank to report that a large sum of money had been mistakenly sent to his account and requested that the bank take necessary steps to return it to the rightful owner,” Daso said.
The police command praised the constable’s action, describing it as a clear demonstration of honesty and professionalism within the force.
