The National Union of Taraba State Students (NUTSS) has condemned the alleged physical assault of a student by a security officer at Taraba State University, describing the incident as unacceptable and a violation of students’ rights.
In a statement signed by the union’s Vice President, Yusuf Yahaya Inuwa, and made available to newsmen in Jalingo on Friday, the union said no student should be subjected to violence or humiliation under any circumstances.
The statement, also copied to the Dean of Student Affairs, Dr. Atando Dauda Agbu, stressed that even where a student is accused of misconduct, established disciplinary procedures and due process must be strictly followed in line with the university’s rules and regulations.
According to the union, security personnel are employed to maintain order and ensure safety on campus, not to administer punishment.
“If lecturers are not permitted to physically assault students, security officers must equally demonstrate professionalism, restraint and respect in their dealings with students,” the statement read.
The union called on the Dean of Student Affairs, the Head of Security and the university management to urgently investigate the matter and take appropriate action.
It added that justice must not only be done but must also be seen to be done in order to maintain trust and stability within the institution.
While pursuing the matter through legal and institutional channels, the union urged students to remain calm, law-abiding and avoid any form of violence or retaliation that could escalate tensions.
NUTSS reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the rights, dignity and welfare of all Taraba State students.
