Suspected Phone Thieves Attack Female Student in Bauchi

The management of Sa’adu Zungur University has confirmed an attack on one of its female students by suspected phone snatchers in Bauchi.
The institution’s Public Relations Officer, Auwal Hassan, disclosed this in a statement issued on Saturday, identifying the victim as Maryam Yakeem, a 200-level Biology Education student.
Hassan explained that the student was reportedly attacked on Thursday by unknown individuals suspected to be phone thieves.
He clarified that the incident occurred outside the university environment, contrary to reports circulating on some online platforms suggesting that the attack took place within the school premises.
“The unfortunate incident occurred outside the university environment, contrary to some misleading reports circulating on certain online media platforms suggesting that the attack took place within the university premises.
“The university management wishes to categorically state that this claim is false and does not reflect the reality of the situation,” the statement said.
The management further noted that the Vice-Chancellor of the institution reaffirmed the university’s commitment to ensuring the safety of students and staff across its three campuses.
According to the statement, ongoing collaboration with internal security structures and relevant security agencies has helped maintain safety within the university campuses, with no recorded incidents of insecurity within the school environment.
It also recalled that the Vice-Chancellor had earlier visited the state Commissioner of Police to strengthen collaboration and improve security support for the university community.
In response to the incident, the university’s Chief Security Officer and the Dean of Student Affairs visited the victim at the hospital, where she is currently receiving treatment.
The management confirmed that the student’s condition is stable.
The Vice-Chancellor, on behalf of the university management, extended sympathy to the affected student and assured students and parents of continued efforts to safeguard lives and property.
The institution also urged students, staff and members of the public to remain calm, assuring that necessary steps were being taken to enhance security within and around the university environment.
