The Federal Government has unlocked 552 million dollars under the HOPE-EDU programme to accelerate basic education reform across the country.
The Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, said in a statement issued by the ministry that the funding marked the fastest activation of education financing of such scale in Nigeria’s history, achieved within 12 months.
Alausa explained that the HOPE for Quality Basic Education for All (HOPE-EDU) programme was designed to strengthen foundational learning, expand access to quality basic education and reinforce accountability across participating states.
He said the initiative was co-financed by the World Bank and the Global Partnership for Education, and aligned with the Nigeria Education Sector Renewal Initiative (NESRI).
According to the minister, the intervention is in line with the commitment of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to reposition education as a driver of national development.
He added that since 2022, federal allocation to education had risen significantly, with N3.520 trillion earmarked for the sector in the 2026 budget, the highest allocation so far.
The minister reaffirmed the ministry’s commitment to ensuring that the investment translates into measurable improvements in learning outcomes, teacher effectiveness, equitable access and system-wide accountability.
The statement was signed by Boriowo Folasade, Director, Press and Public Relations, Federal Ministry of Education.
