NLC demands fresh wage awards as fuel prices soar

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has called on the Federal Government to implement new wage awards and relief measures to ease the impact of rising petrol prices on Nigerian workers.

This is contained in a statement by the labour body following the sharp increase in fuel costs across the country.

The NLC attributed the surge in petrol prices to global tensions involving the United States, Israel and Iran, saying the situation has worsened the economic burden on workers.

The congress said the development exposed the fragility of Nigeria’s downstream petroleum sector and stressed the urgent need for reforms to stabilise fuel supply.

It urged the government to revive refineries in Port Harcourt Refinery, Warri Refinery and Kaduna Refinery to reduce dependence on imported petrol.

In addition to the new wage awards, the NLC demanded tax relief and enhanced support for vulnerable Nigerians to cushion the impact of the rising cost of living.

The labour body also called on the government to ensure that the projected ₦30 trillion oil windfall from the Middle East crisis is deployed to support citizens and mitigate economic hardship.

The congress reiterated its commitment to defending workers’ welfare and urged swift action from the authorities.
