Lecturer Slumps, Dies While Teaching in Class

A lecturer at Kogi State Polytechnic, Mr. Anslem Ojodomo, has died after collapsing in the classroom while delivering a lecture.

The Rector of the institution, Prof. Salihu Avidime, confirmed the incident in a statement issued on Friday and signed by Mr. John Onimisi, Acting Coordinator, Directorate of Public Relations.

Ojodomo, a lecturer in the Department of Public Administration, reportedly collapsed while addressing students during a class session.

Some students who witnessed the incident told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), on condition of anonymity, that the lecturer suddenly slumped and was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he was confirmed dead.

The rector described the development as a “deep personal shock” to the institution, noting that he had met Ojodomo only hours before the incident, during which they exchanged pleasantries.

Avidime praised the late lecturer as a humble and dedicated academic who was committed to excellence and service.

“The Polytechnic community is mourning the loss of a promising academic and dependable colleague who embodied scholarship, service and character,” he said.

He added that Ojodomo served the institution in various capacities, including as Deputy Dean, Students Services, and as a member of several committees.

The incident comes barely a month after another lecturer, Dr. Barnabas Akuba, passed away shortly after completing his doctoral programme.

Ojodomo’s death has sparked concern among staff and students, with many expressing fears over the loss of two lecturers within a short period.

The late Ojodomo held Master’s degrees from Prince Abubakar Audu University, Anyigba, where he had recently defended his Ph.D proposal.

He joined Kogi State Polytechnic in 2021 and was described by colleagues as a committed lecturer whose contributions to the institution would be remembered.

The management of the polytechnic commiserated with his family and the people of Igalamela/Odolu Local Government Area, praying for the repose of his soul. (NAN)
