NELFUND Debunks Fake Notice Claiming Suspension of Student Loan

The Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) has dismissed as fake a circulating notice claiming that it has suspended its student loan disbursement programme, urging students and the public to disregard the information.

In a statement posted on its official X handle on Saturday, the agency clarified that it has not announced any suspension or temporary pause in its loan scheme, describing the viral document as misleading and unauthorised.

The fake notice, which circulated widely on social media, alleged that the fund had halted disbursements due to “unforeseen operational circumstances” and a “temporary pause” in the student loan programme.

However, NELFUND categorically denied the claim, stating: “This document is fake. Kindly disregard the circulating letter on suspension of student loan disbursements. NELFUND has not issued any such directive.”

The agency advised students, parents, and stakeholders to rely only on verified communication channels for accurate updates on the student loan scheme.

It warned that misinformation could create unnecessary panic among beneficiaries and distort public understanding of government interventions in education financing.

NELFUND noted that the student loan initiative remains active and continues to support eligible Nigerian students seeking access to higher education.

The clarification comes amid increasing attention on the scheme, which the Federal Government says has already supported over one million students since its establishment.

Government figures also indicate that the intervention has significantly expanded access to tertiary education, while additional youth empowerment programmes under related initiatives have reached thousands of beneficiaries nationwide.

NELFUND reiterated its commitment to transparency and assured the public that any official update regarding the programme would be communicated through its verified platforms.
