SSANU UNIMAID holds Special Congress, Endorses Indefinite Strike May 1st

The Branch Chairman of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities at the University of Maiduguri, Comrade Samaila Sadiq, says members of the branch have resolved to support the planned nationwide strike action if the Federal Government fails to conclude ongoing renegotiations with the union.

Sadiq disclosed this in a message issued after a special congress meeting of the union held on Wednesday.

He said members at the meeting unanimously endorsed the decision reached at the 45th National Executive Council (NEC) meeting of SSANU held at the Ekiti State University, Ado Ekiti, from March 25 to March 28, 2026.

According to him, the NEC had earlier issued a communiqué directing all branches nationwide to prepare for a total, comprehensive and indefinite strike action if the Federal Government refuses to conclude, sign and implement the ongoing renegotiation with SSANU leadership at the national level.

The chairman noted that the timeline earlier issued for the strike action covered April 1 to April 30, 2026, adding that the union, in collaboration with the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions under the Joint Action Committee (JAC) of SSANU/NASU, was ready across branches nationwide.

He added that the unions were prepared from May 1, 2026, to declare the strike action if there was no positive response from the Federal Government.

Sadiq said there would be no reversal of the decision unless the Federal Government met the demands contained in the renegotiation agreement.
