NAAT Suspends Planned Strike After FG Meeting Breakthrough

The National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT) says its meeting with the Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, has resolved key issues delaying the renegotiation of the 2009 agreement with the Federal Government.

The union disclosed this in a circular issued by its General Secretary, Comrade Abubakar V. Yusuf, following a meeting held on April 29 at the Federal Secretariat Complex, Abuja.

According to the circular, the meeting was convened to address concerns surrounding the stalled renegotiation process between NAAT and the Federal Government.

It stated that after extensive deliberations, both parties agreed that the Federal Government, through the minister, would take steps to resolve all outstanding issues hindering the timely conclusion of the exercise.

The union also said the minister directed the immediate withdrawal of a leaked letter suggesting a 30 per cent salary increase for non-teaching staff in tertiary institutions.

NAAT, however, clarified that the proposed increase did not affect its members, who are classified as academic technologists rather than non-teaching staff.

The circular further noted that the renegotiation process would resume upon the return of the Chairman of the Federal Government’s Expanded Tertiary Institutions Negotiation Committee, Alhaji Mahmud Yayale Ahmed, who is currently on a medical trip.

It added that the union had agreed to suspend all planned industrial actions pending the outcome of the renegotiation.

NAAT urged its members to remain calm and hopeful, expressing optimism that the process would ease financial challenges faced by members and improve working conditions.

The union reiterated its commitment to achieving a successful resolution as discussions continue.
