The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has taken custody of Bello Bodejo, an aspirant for the Taraba Central Senatorial District seat on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC), following his arrest by security operatives in Taraba State.
Bodejo, who is also the President of the Miyetti Allah Kautal Hore, was reportedly arrested on Thursday night shortly after arriving in Jalingo through the Danbaba Suntai Airport.
According to his personal aide, Malam Umar, the APC aspirant was apprehended after some political associates accompanied him to the office of a security agency.
Speaking in a telephone interview, Umar disclosed that Bodejo had been transferred to Abuja and handed over to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.
He said the family had yet to be informed of the specific offence for which the politician was arrested.
Umar, however, alleged that the arrest was connected to Bodejo’s growing popularity in the race for the Taraba Central Senatorial seat.
He accused unnamed government officials and politicians in the state of masterminding the arrest to stop him from taking part in the ongoing screening exercise for aspirants contesting governorship, Senate and House of Representatives positions under the APC.
“As I am talking to you now, the screening of aspirants for governorship, Senate and House of Representatives seats is about to be concluded, and the aim of those behind the arrest is to prevent him from participating in the screening exercise,” Umar alleged.
Neither the EFCC nor security agencies had issued an official statement on the reason for the arrest as of the time of filing this report.
