The Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, in Taraba State, Isaiah Jirapye Magaji, has apologized for the recent controversies surrounding the organization’s involvement in politics.
The public apology was contained in a statement made available to journalists in Jalingo, the state capital on Wednesday.
Acknowledging the confusion that arose from CAN’s communication, especially concerning the candidacy of the Social Democratic Party, SDP, Innocent Umaru Jabanya for Jalingo, Yorro, Zing Federal constituency, Magaji issued a formal public apology to both the Church and the public.
Magaji clarified CAN’s role as the political arm of the church, emphasizing its duty to unite churches, promote mutual respect among Christians and provide direction when necessary.
He also assured the Christian community of CAN’s continued focus on the interests of the church and reiterated the organization’s commitment to unity.
Regarding the SDP candidate, he emphasized that CAN had extended an appeal to him to step down from his candidacy, to foster unity.
Calling for peace and unity among Christians, Magaji urged voters to participate in the ongoing supplementary elections peacefully and wisely.
The statement comes amid heightened tensions and political activities in Taraba State.
