The Tripartite Committee on the National Minimum Wage has urged stakeholders to participate in proposing and implementing a new minimum wage for Nigerian workers.
The Chairman of the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission, Ekpo Nta, emphasized the importance of engaging all parties in the process.
The committee is set to conduct a public hearing on March 7 to gather input on the national minimum wage issue within the context of the country’s economic dynamics. Its goal is to recommend a practical and realistic minimum wage to the government, ensuring inclusivity among all stakeholders.
Public hearings are scheduled across the six geo-political zones of Nigeria on March 7 at 10 a.m. The venues include Banquet Hall, Government House in Yola, Adamawa State for North-East; Africa House, Government House in Kano for North-West; Ibom Hall in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State for South-South; Chida Hotel Event Centre in Abuja for North-Central; while venues for South-East in Enugu and South-West in Lagos will be announced later.
Stakeholders are encouraged to submit memoranda with proposals for the new national minimum wage per month, coverage details, productivity enhancement strategies, review frequency, enforcement mechanisms, and penalties for non-compliance. The committee welcomes all relevant recommendations related to the subject matter to ensure a comprehensive and inclusive process.
