The outgoing Vice Chancellor of Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU) in Bauchi state, Professor Muhammad AbdulAziz, has proposed that lecturers should undergo drug testing, not just students.
During his valedictory speech to the University’s Senate, Professor AbdulAziz emphasized the need for staff members to also undergo drug tests, stating that it’s essential to ensure the sanctity and academic excellence within the university system.
“We also have to volunteer to have this test done to us because we have to sanitize the university. The character is very important for all of us
“If the students are to be subjected to drug tests to determine their mental health status, nothing is wrong if the lecturers too are subjected to the same test. That is the only way to check excesses in the University system.”
Furthermore, the VC revealed discussions with the Federal Ministry of Education to introduce mandatory drug tests for students before registration in universities, emphasizing the significance of this measure in promoting mental health and sanitizing the university system.
Acknowledging the support from various stakeholders, including the federal government and its agencies, Professor AbdulAziz expressed gratitude for the achievements in infrastructural development, academic content, and community services during his tenure.
Meanwhile, the Acting Vice Chancellor, Professor Sani Kunya, expressed gratitude for the honor bestowed upon him by the University’s Senate and the Federal Government’s confirmation. He pledged to uphold academic excellence and build on the legacies of his predecessors.
“I want to assure you that your valuable confidence in me will not be disappointing. I shall do everything within my capability to build on the legacies of my predecessors in terms of maintaining and improving academic excellence,” he assured,” he said.
I think the VC has left important issues to look for irrelevant issues like the EFCC that left financial crimes to go after those they claimed are abusing the naira. People with misplaced priorities are all over the country.
