A Professor in the Department of Agricultural Extension and Rural Development at the Federal University Dutse (FUD), Jigawa State, Prof. Ado Garba Jangargari, has secured a N25 million grant under the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) National Research Fund (NRF) scheme.
The grant was awarded in recognition of his research proposal titled, “Tech for Peace: Engaging Northern Nigeria’s Pastoralists in Non-Agricultural Livelihoods to Counter Banditry and Kidnapping.”
The research seeks to explore technology-driven solutions that can provide alternative sources of livelihood for pastoral communities in Northern Nigeria as part of efforts to tackle insecurity in the region.
According to details of the project, the study aims to reduce the incidence of banditry and kidnapping by creating sustainable non-agricultural economic opportunities for pastoralists, thereby addressing some of the socio-economic factors linked to insecurity.
Members of the university community described the award as a significant achievement for the institution and a reflection of its growing contribution to national development through research and innovation.
They noted that the grant would further strengthen the university’s research capacity and support efforts aimed at finding practical solutions to Nigeria’s developmental and security challenges.
Prof. Jangargari is expected to commence implementation of the project under the TETFund National Research Fund programme, which supports high-impact research designed to address critical national issues.
The NRF scheme is one of TETFund’s interventions aimed at promoting quality research in Nigerian tertiary institutions and encouraging innovative solutions to challenges affecting the country.
