The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has warned the Gombe State government of a potential confrontation over the newly mandated N70,000 minimum wage. Governor Muhammad Yahaya’s declaration that the state cannot afford the wage has sparked tensions.
NLC Secretary in Gombe State, Ibrahim Fika, expressed the union’s dissatisfaction, stating, “We don’t see the reason why a governor will say he can’t afford to pay N70,000. We are expecting governors to pay more than that, not less.”
The NLC is awaiting guidance from its national headquarters to begin their struggle for the implementation of the new minimum wage in Gombe State.
President Bola Tinubu recently signed the new minimum wage bill into law, making it compulsory for all states. However, Governor Yahaya’s stance has raised concerns about the state’s willingness to comply.
