The Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFUND) has unveiled plans to address security and power challenges in Nigerian tertiary institutions.
TETFUND Chairman, Aminu Bello Masari, disclosed this at a two-day National Assembly retreat in Lagos, emphasizing education’s pivotal role in national development.
“Threats to security and inadequate power supply jeopardize students’ and staff’s safety, academic performance, and institutional stability,” Masari said.
He noted that education is the bedrock of national progress and its funding must reflect its importance.
Masari urged the National Assembly to revisit the funding structure for public institutions, serving over 90% of Nigeria’s tertiary education students.
The retreat was attended by lawmakers, including Senator Muntari Dandutse, Chairman Senate Committee on Tertiary Institutions and TETFUND, Hon Miriam Onuoha, Chairman House Committee on TETFUND, and former Edo State Governor, Adams Oshiomhole.
Masari emphasized the need for sustainable financing models to ensure the future of higher education in Nigeria.
“TETFUND’s resources are stretched, but we must prioritize addressing these critical challenges,” he said.
The Fund’s intervention is expected to alleviate the security and power challenges facing Nigerian tertiary institutions.
