Gov. Mai Mala Buni of Yobe on Monday launched the disbursement of N50 million cash grants and start-up kits to 500 beneficiaries trained in the production of household products by the Yobe State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
The beneficiaries, trained in making products such as soap, detergents, charcoal, shoes, and disinfectants using locally sourced materials, each received a grant of N100,000 and a start-up kit to support their entrepreneurial journey.
Speaking at the event, Buni urged the beneficiaries to make good use of the skills and tools provided. He also called on local markets to patronise the products made by the beneficiaries to foster economic growth in the state.
“This initiative is a significant step toward building a self-reliant community. I encourage all beneficiaries to use this opportunity to create a sustainable source of income for themselves and their families,” Buni said.
The governor commended SEMA and its partners for their commitment to empowering citizens and improving livelihoods, particularly among internally displaced persons (IDPs) and vulnerable groups.
The Executive Secretary of SEMA, in his address, praised Buni for mobilising resources to train and equip beneficiaries.
“Today, we celebrate 500 individuals who have acquired life-changing skills. This initiative is part of a broader effort to empower our people and ensure financial independence,” he said.
He noted that similar training programs have been conducted across Potiskum, Fika, Fune, Nangere, Gujba, and Damaturu, impacting over 2,500 individuals.
The secretary also introduced the “Buni Plus Products,” which include bar soap, liquid soap, charcoal, shoes, and detergents, as well as the agency’s annual Solace Magazine.
Four facilitators were recognised for their contributions to the program:
Aisha Kidah, an entrepreneur consultant.
Aisha Abubakar Ade, UNDP ambassador and a top beneficiary of the Fika 2022 training.
Mamman Ahmed, a consumer protection consultant.
Usman Potiskum, an entrepreneur.
The secretary also expressed condolences over the passing of a beneficiary, Abdulrahman Audu, assuring that his family would receive his cash grant and additional livelihood support.
