Polytechnic Workers Issue 21-day Strike Ultimatum Over Unmet Demands

The Senior Staff Association of Nigeria Polytechnics (SSANIP) has given the Federal Government a 21-day ultimatum to address its outstanding demands or risk a nationwide strike.

The decision was reached at the union’s 77th General Executive Council meeting held between Aug. 26 and Aug. 28 at Audu Bako College of Agriculture, Danbatta, Kano State.

In a communiqué signed by its National President, Philip Ogunsipe, and National Secretary, Sehu Gaya, the association accused the government of insincerity and neglect in resolving issues affecting its members’ welfare.

The union listed its demands to include: release of the new schemes and conditions of service, constitution of the renegotiation committee on the 2010 agreement, and release of the 2023–2025 Needs Assessment funds.

Others are payment of outstanding arrears such as promotion arrears, 25/35 per cent salary review arrears, wage award, and full implementation of the new minimum wage.

“The council also observed that despite several efforts to ensure peaceful resolution of the above-stated demands, the government has only paid lip service to the issues.

“Based on the above, the union demands immediate action on the listed issues within 21 days beginning from Aug. 27, 2025, or we will be left with no option but to withdraw our services across the nation,” the communiqué stated.

SSANIP expressed dissatisfaction over what it described as the government’s lack of seriousness in honouring agreements and giving priority to the education sector.
