Just In: NASU, SSANU Issue Strike Notice Over Unpaid Allowances, Salaries

The Joint Action Committee (JAC) of the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) has issued a seven-day strike notice to the Federal Government over unresolved labour issues.

The unions, in a letter dated Sept. 12, 2025, addressed to the Minister of Education, recalled that several meetings had been held with government officials on the matter but without meaningful outcome.

The letter signed by Prince Peters Adeyemi, General Secretary of NASU, and Comrade Mohammed Ibrahim, President of SSANU and Chairman of JAC, listed the grievances of members to include:

unjust disbursement of N50 billion earned allowances;

non-payment of outstanding withheld salaries and arrears of 25/35 per cent salary increments; and

delay in renegotiating the 2009 agreements between the Federal Government and the unions.

According to the unions, at a meeting held with the Minister of Education on July 4, 2025, it was agreed that a Tripartite Committee comprising representatives of the Federal Ministry of Education, the National Universities Commission, and JAC would be set up to resolve the impasse.

They, however, alleged that while the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) had concluded renegotiations with the Federal Government team, non-teaching staff unions had been sidelined despite resubmitting their memoranda of demands.

The unions also accused the government of failing to conclude discussions on the payment of two months’ withheld salaries, even though the minister had pledged to expedite action on the matter.

“Despite our repeated efforts to draw your attention to address concerns affecting our members in the Universities and Inter-University Centres, there appears to be nothing positive forthcoming from your office,” the letter stated.

“In light of the persistent unresolved issues, and the apparent lack of responsiveness from the Government to our legitimate concerns, we are compelled to serve a formal notice of seven days effective from Monday, Sept. 15, 2025, to address our agitations.

“Failing this, members of NASU and SSANU would embark on a series of legitimate industrial actions including strikes to press home our demands,” it added.

The unions urged government to act swiftly to prevent disruptions in the university system.
