Bauchi State Government has expressed readiness to implement the Supreme Court judgment granting full autonomy to Local Governments as the third tier of government.
The decision was reached on Tuesday during a stakeholders’ consultative meeting held at the Banquet Hall of the Government House and chaired by Governor Bala Mohammed. The meeting had in attendance Deputy Governor Auwal Jatau, Speaker of the State House of Assembly Abubakar Suleiman, and the 20 elected Local Government chairpersons.
Briefing journalists after the meeting, Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Aminu Hammayo, said two Executive Bills would soon be sent to the State House of Assembly to provide a framework for the implementation of autonomy.
“Local government autonomy has been a central issue across the country following the Supreme Court judgment. The governor has deemed it necessary to thoroughly examine its implications and processes for Bauchi State,” Hammayo said.
He added that the meeting discussed critical issues, including local government administration, revenue generation, sharing formulas, and structural challenges. Stakeholders provided input on two draft bills to guide the implementation.
“These include the Local Government Administration Bill 2025 and another bill on the implementation of local government autonomy in Bauchi State,” Hammayo disclosed.
According to him, the Attorney-General and Commissioner of Justice presented the bills, which were reviewed by stakeholders to ensure they reflect diverse perspectives and align with the Supreme Court’s directive.
Hammayo assured that the bills would soon be forwarded to the State House of Assembly for consideration and passage.
The initiative is expected to strengthen governance, improve service delivery at the grassroots, and promote fiscal independence of local councils.
