Hostilities have resumed between Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) in Abadam Local Government Area of Borno State, two weeks after a failed truce.
A counterinsurgency expert, Zagazola Makama, disclosed on Wednesday that the latest clash occurred on Feb. 14 near ISWAP camps in Toumbun Gini and Toumbun Ali.
Makama, in a post on X, reported that ISWAP suffered heavy casualties during the battle, which took place on water.
He warned that the conflict might escalate and spread to Kukawa Local Government Area, where Boko Haram continues attacks against ISWAP fighters.
The Bakura Doro-led faction of Boko Haram and ISWAP have been locked in violent confrontations since 2016, when ISWAP split from Boko Haram and pledged allegiance to the Islamic State.
Security analysts warn that the renewed fighting could undermine counterinsurgency efforts in the region.
