Confusion Over 30% Pay Rise as FG Withdraws Circulated Letter

The Federal Ministry of Education has withdrawn a letter that circulated publicly claiming approval of a 30 per cent increase in the consolidated salary structure for non-teaching staff of Colleges of Education.

In a letter dated April 16, 2026, and addressed to the General Secretary of the Non-Academic Staff Union of Education and Associated Institutions (NASU), the ministry described the earlier communication as an unauthorised public release.

The letter, signed by Dr. U. C. Uba, Director of Colleges of Education, on behalf of the Minister of Education, stated that the circulated document purportedly conveyed presidential approval for the salary increase.

According to the ministry, the letter was circulated without due authorisation and did not follow established communication and approval protocols required for sensitive matters.

It directed that the contents of the earlier communication be disregarded in its entirety pending proper review and official dissemination through appropriate channels.

The ministry further disclosed that immediate steps had been taken to retract the circulated document and halt any actions or processes initiated based on its contents.

It added that relevant stakeholders were being duly informed of the withdrawal.

The ministry also assured that ongoing negotiations with non-academic staff unions in tertiary institutions would continue with firm commitment to achieving the desired outcomes.
