
A fisherman has won N10 million at the 2026 Nwonyo Traditional Fishing Festival in Ibi Local Government Area of Taraba after recording the largest catch weighing 55.6 kilogrammes.
The annual festival, held at Lake Nwonyo, attracted local and international visitors, including representatives of President Bola Tinubu and foreign dignitaries.
President Tinubu was represented by the Minister of Art, Culture, Tourism and Creative Economy, Hannatu Musawa.
The second and third position winners received N3 million and N2 million respectively.
Other highlights of the festival included a colourful boat regatta, featuring decorated canoes that displayed the cultural heritage and traditions of the people.
The Prime Minister of Grenada, Dickon Mitchell, Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang and other dignitaries attended the event.
Gov. Agbu Kefas of Taraba said the festival remained a key platform for promoting tourism, cultural heritage and economic development in the state.
He added that efforts were ongoing to secure international recognition for the festival through UNESCO.
Kefas noted that improved security in the state had boosted investor confidence and encouraged international participation in the event.

The top three winners received cash prizes of N10 million, N3 million and N2 million respectively.
Gov. Agbu Kefas said the presence of international guests demonstrated growing global interest in Taraba’s tourism potential.
He added that the state government remained committed to ensuring security and creating an enabling environment for tourism and investment.
