The Governor of Gombe State, Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, has approved the full implementation of the national minimum wage for workers in local government councils, primary healthcare facilities and Local Education Authorities (LEA) across the state.
The approval was conveyed by the Head of Civil Service, Muazu Shehu, who said the directive would take effect from May 2026.
Shehu explained that the directive covers staff of the 11 local government councils, Local Education Authority workers and primary healthcare personnel in the state.
He stated that the decision cleared the outstanding 43 per cent balance, completing 100 per cent implementation of the new wage structure for the affected workers.
According to him, improved fiscal conditions at the local government level made the full implementation possible, enabling councils to meet salary obligations without disruption.
The Head of Civil Service noted that the full rollout of the wage structure was expected to boost workers’ morale, enhance productivity and strengthen service delivery at the grassroots level.
He recalled that Gombe State was among the first states to implement the new national minimum wage following its passage into law in 2024.
Governor Yahaya has consistently emphasised that improving workers’ welfare remains central to his administration’s development agenda, describing civil servants as critical drivers of governance and effective service delivery.
Organised labour unions, including the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC), had previously commended the administration for prioritising workers’ welfare despite prevailing economic challenges faced by many states.
