Teachers in Bauchi State have appealed to the state government to address lingering welfare issues, particularly the non-payment of leave grants, and to invest in improving school infrastructure and learning materials.
The appeal was made on Wednesday in Bauchi during separate interviews as schools resumed academic activities after the Ramadan break.
Sunusi Hamza, Headmaster of Sa’adu Zungur Model Primary School, expressed satisfaction with the turnout of pupils but lamented the prevailing challenges in the education sector.
“We are happy to see our students return in large numbers. However, we continue to face challenges in infrastructure, lack of teaching materials, and unresolved welfare issues like leave grants,” he said.
Similarly, Malam Danladi Abi-Doka, Vice Principal of Government Junior Secondary School in Games Village, Bauchi, called on parents to ensure their children return to school promptly while urging the government to fulfill its commitments to the education sector.
He stressed the need for collective support to improve teaching and learning outcomes.
Also speaking, Dr Mercy John, Principal of Sabil Sunlight School, emphasised the importance of prioritising the education sector for the benefit of future generations.
“There is no reason to keep children at home once school resumes. Teachers should also give their best to equip students with foundational knowledge,” she said.
The educators maintained that prompt action on their demands would boost teachers’ morale, enhance academic performance, and help the state’s education system meet acceptable standards.
