Yobe Assembly Amends Hisbah Law, Clarifies Roles

The Yobe State House of Assembly has passed an amendment to the law establishing the Hisbah Commission, clearly defining the duties of the Executive Chairman and State Commandant.

The amendment aims to enhance the effectiveness of the Commission in enforcing Shariah and combating social vices in the state.

According to Hon. Yakubu Suleiman, Chairman of the House Committee on Justice and Religious Affairs, the amended law creates a distinct office of the State Commandant of Hisbah Commission, who will work under the Executive Chairman’s directives to oversee the activities of the Hisba Corps.

The amendment is expected to facilitate the Commission’s duties and promote efficiency in its operations.

In a related development, the House has received four nominees for confirmation as Executive Chairman and permanent members of the Hisba Commission.

The nominees are Yahuza Hamza Abubakar (Executive Chairman), Sheikh Mohammed Mahdi, Alkasim A Damagum, and Mallam Lawan Abba Shettima (permanent members).

The Speaker of the House, Right Honourable Chiroma Buba Mashio, has referred the nominees to the House Committee on Justice and Religious Affairs for screening.

The Hisbah Commission is responsible for monitoring the enforcement and implementation of Shariah and preventing social vices in Yobe State.
