Zulum Fulfils Promise, Rewards Brave School Watchman with House, ₦2m in Maiduguri

Borno State Governor, Prof. Babagana Umara Zulum, has fulfilled his earlier pledge to Mallam Modu Fandi, a watchman at Government Girls College, Maiduguri, by awarding him a house and ₦2 million in recognition of his bravery and long years of service.
The presentation was carried out on Wednesday, with officials of the Borno State Ministry of Education handing over the keys and allocation letter for a house located at Mai Mala Buni Housing Estate.
Fandi was also presented with ₦2 million — comprising ₦1 million from the ministry and another ₦1 million contributed by former Commissioner for Education, Engr. Lawan Abba Wakilbe.
He had earlier been honoured as the Education Sector’s Most Outstanding Staff Member of the Year after he sustained injuries while preventing students from leaving the school during a security scare on November 24, 2025.
Governor Zulum had announced the reward during the launch of the National Community Food Bank Programme in Maiduguri, an event attended by the First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, where nine education workers were recognised for outstanding service.
While eight of the recipients received vehicles, Fandi was specifically promised a house in recognition of his courage and dedication to duty.
Speaking after the presentation, Fandi expressed appreciation to the governor and education authorities, describing the gesture as a rare recognition of his decades-long service in the education sector.
The development underscores the Zulum administration’s continued emphasis on rewarding excellence and boosting morale among public sector workers in Borno State.
