No Culture of Impunity in Gombe, Govt Tells Amnesty over Alleged Assault

The Gombe State Government has dismissed claims of a “culture of impunity” following a statement by Amnesty International over an alleged assault involving an aide attached to the Office of the Chief of Staff to the Governor, describing the rights group’s position as a mischaracterisation of an isolated incident.

In a statement issued on Friday by the Director-General (Press Affairs), Government House, Gombe, Mr Ismaila Uba Misilli, the government said it does not trivialise or excuse acts of violence but expressed concern over what it termed sweeping conclusions and unfounded generalisations by Amnesty International.

According to the statement, the individual involved in the incident acted strictly in a personal capacity and not on the instruction, authority or behalf of Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya or the Gombe State Government.

“The attempt to portray this isolated incident as a reflection of official government policy or a so-called culture of impunity is inaccurate, unfair and misleading,” the government said.

The administration stressed that under Governor Inuwa Yahaya, CON, Gombe State has maintained zero tolerance for thuggery, lawlessness and abuse of power, adding that the government has consistently demonstrated respect for human rights, freedom of expression, political plurality and the rule of law.

The government further expressed disappointment that Amnesty International allegedly rushed to the press without adequate verification of facts or seeking the government’s position, noting that responsible advocacy requires diligence, balance and fairness, especially when public trust and reputations are involved.

Misilli said appropriate internal mechanisms had already been activated to address the matter in line with the law and established procedures, assuring that due process would be followed and anyone found culpable would be dealt with accordingly.

He cautioned against the politicisation of the incident or attempts to drag the Governor and the state government into what he described as a purely individual matter.
“Gombe State remains a place where dissenting opinions are tolerated, political engagement is encouraged and civic space is protected,” the statement added.

The government called on Amnesty International and other stakeholders to exercise restraint, accuracy and responsibility in public commentary, urging constructive engagement and thorough fact-finding before making pronouncements.

The statement reaffirmed the state’s commitment to peace, justice, accountability and the protection of the rights and dignity of all citizens.
