The Federal Government has declared June 29 to July 3, 2026, as National Learning Assessment Week ahead of the country’s first nationwide learning assessment exercise.
The Federal Ministry of Education disclosed this in a statement issued on Wednesday in Abuja.
According to the ministry, the assessment will be conducted across the 36 states of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) to generate reliable data on learners’ achievement levels and support evidence-based educational planning and policy reforms.
The ministry said the exercise would also provide critical information for resource allocation and strategies aimed at improving learning outcomes nationwide.
It explained that the assessment was strictly diagnostic and would not be used for promotion, placement, certification or any form of examination ranking.
The statement noted that preparations for the exercise began in 2025 through collaboration between the Federal Ministry of Education and the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), with support from UNICEF and the World Bank.
It added that assessment instruments had been developed and pilot-tested, while personnel required for the exercise had undergone training.
According to the ministry, the assessment will be conducted in selected schools nationwide and will involve learners in Primary Three, Primary Five, Junior Secondary School Two (JS2) and Senior Secondary School Two (SS2).
Subjects to be assessed include English Language, Mathematics, Basic Science and Technology, as well as Citizenship and Heritage Studies.
The Minister of Education, Maruf Tunji Alausa, described the initiative as a major step toward strengthening accountability in the education sector and improving learning outcomes through evidence-based decision-making.
The minister said the exercise would provide government and stakeholders with credible data needed to address learning gaps and enhance the quality of education across the country.
