
Several worshippers were feared killed on Wednesday following a bomb blast by an improvised explosive device inside a mosque at Gamborun Market in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital.
The blast occurred during prayers, triggering panic and chaos in the densely populated market area.
Eyewitnesses said the explosion damaged parts of the mosque, killing some worshippers instantly while others sustained injuries.
Traders and residents were seen fleeing the scene as smoke rose from the area. Some bystanders attempted to assist the injured before the arrival of emergency responders.
Security operatives swiftly cordoned off the market to secure the area, prevent further harm, and conduct a preliminary assessment. Emergency services were also deployed to evacuate victims and restore calm.
As of the time of filing this report, authorities had yet to confirm the exact number of casualties or the cause of the explosion. Investigations are ongoing.
