The Police in Taraba State have arrested a man, identified as Haggai Ishaku, over the alleged physical assault of his minor daughter in Jalingo, the state capital.
The arrest followed reports that the suspect allegedly inflicted injuries on the child after she attended a church crossover programme.
Confirming the development, a police source said the suspect was arrested by officers of the GRA Division, Jalingo, led by the Divisional Police Officer (DPO), after the matter was brought to the attention of the command.
According to the source, the suspect was initially contacted and asked to report himself to the police but declined, prompting officers to move in and effect his arrest.
The incident, which reportedly occurred at the family residence behind the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) Secretariat area in Jalingo, sparked public outrage after details were shared on social media by rights advocates, who called for urgent intervention to protect the child and other minors in the household.
Child rights and women advocacy groups have since condemned the alleged act, describing it as a violation of the Child Rights Act and other laws protecting minors from abuse.
The police source said the victim is receiving attention, while steps are being taken to ensure her safety and that of other children involved.
“The suspect is currently in custody, and investigation is ongoing. The law will take its course,” the source said.
The Taraba State Police Command has reiterated its commitment to protecting children and vulnerable persons, warning that acts of violence within the family setting will be treated as criminal offences.
