Pioneer ATBU Vice-Chancellor Dies at 88

Professor Buba Garegy Bajoga, OON, pioneer Vice-Chancellor of Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU), Bauchi, has died at the age of 88.

The renowned engineer, educationist and administrator passed away on Wednesday, February 5, 2026, in the United Kingdom.

The death of Professor Bajoga has been confirmed by family and government sources, who described his passing as a great loss to the academic community, Gombe State and the nation at large.

Gombe State Governor, Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, CON, expressed deep sadness over the demise of the elder statesman, describing him as an academic of international repute and a distinguished son of the state.

The governor noted that the late professor dedicated his life to scholarship, public service and national development, adding that his legacy in higher education and engineering would continue to endure.

Professor Bajoga served as Vice-Chancellor of ATBU, Bauchi, between 1984 and 1994, where he played a key role in the growth and consolidation of the institution in its early years.

He was also a Professor of Electrical Engineering, having risen through the academic ranks at Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria.

Beyond the university system, the late Professor Bajoga contributed significantly to Nigeria’s telecommunications and engineering sectors, serving in leadership roles at Nigerian Telecommunications Limited (NITEL), the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) and the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN).

The governor extended condolences to the immediate family of the deceased, the academic community and the people of Gombe State.

He prayed that Almighty Allah forgive the shortcomings of the late scholar and grant him Aljannatul Firdaus, while also granting the bereaved family the strength to bear the loss.

Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced by the family.
