UNIMAID, El-Kanemi College Strengthen Ties Ahead of Jubilee

The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Maiduguri, Prof. Mohammed Laminu Mele, has described the El-Kanemi College of Islamic Theology as a prestigious sister institution that has remained a cornerstone of academic and moral excellence in the North-East for five decades.

Mele made the remark on Monday in Maiduguri when he received a delegation of the college’s Alumni Association led by Prof. Abdulmumin Sani at the Senate Building of the university.

The visit was aimed at formalising partnership between the University of Maiduguri and the college ahead of its 50th anniversary celebration tagged “El-Kanemi at 50,” scheduled for April 2026.

The vice-chancellor also revealed his personal ties to the institution, noting that he had served as a teacher at the college for several years before joining the services of the University of Maiduguri.

He expressed delight at the milestone, stating that the university was proud of the prominent professionals and scholars produced by the college, many of whom are currently serving as staff within the university community.

According to him, an institution as old and impactful as El-Kanemi College deserves to be treated with the highest level of prestige.

Mele pledged the university’s commitment to providing technical and academic support, particularly in staff capacity building, mentorship for diploma programmes, and professional guidance from engineers and architects to assist in the development of the college’s master plan.

Earlier, the leader of the delegation, Prof. Abdulmumin Sani, appreciated the vice-chancellor for granting the alumni association audience.

Sani disclosed that the Golden Jubilee would feature a week-long series of activities, including a medical outreach programme for the host community, the launch of a commemorative school magazine titled “Student’s Book of Life,” and academic presentations on faith and community development.

He also formally invited the vice-chancellor to serve as the keynote speaker at the grand finale of the anniversary.

The vice-chancellor accepted the invitation and confirmed he would deliver a special address titled “The Role of Academic Institutions in Preserving Knowledge, Faith, and Community Development.”

The event featured an exchange of tokens and a commitment by both institutions to strengthen their long-standing relationship.
