FG unveils digital platform to tackle procurement delays in education sector

The Federal Government has launched the Procurement Compliance Monitoring System (PICOMS), a digital platform aimed at eliminating procurement delays and improving transparency in Nigeria’s education sector.

The Minister of Education, Maruf Olatunji Alausa, announced the initiative during a capacity-building session for procurement officers held at the auditorium of the National Universities Commission, on Thursday in Abuja.

Alausa said procurement delays had slowed the execution of key education projects due to incomplete documentation, weak submissions and procedural lapses.

He noted that strengthening procurement compliance was critical to ensuring efficient project delivery and proper management of public resources.

According to him, the Ministry introduced PICOMS to manage procurement processes electronically, enable real-time tracking of submissions and reduce approval timelines across the ministry and its agencies.

The platform will also cover commissions, parastatals and tertiary institutions under the education sector.

Also speaking, the Director-General of the Bureau of Public Procurement, Adebowale Adebukola Adedokun, highlighted recurring challenges in procurement processes, including incomplete documentation and weak submissions.

He emphasised the need for improved compliance to enhance transparency and efficiency in public procurement.

The ministry reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening accountability, transparency and efficient delivery of projects across the education sector.
