The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) says negotiations with the Federal Government have yielded proposals for a 30 to 35 per cent salary increase and improved allowances for non-teaching staff in Nigerian universities.

The union disclosed this in a communiqué issued after an emergency meeting held at its National Secretariat in Abuja.

According to the communiqué, the proposed upward review under the Consolidated Tertiary Institutions and Tertiary Education Salary Structure (CONTTA) is awaiting presidential approval.

SSANU said all existing non-academic staff allowances, as well as new allowances under consideration, would be adjusted in line with the approved percentage increase.

Details of the renegotiated package indicate that workers on salary levels 1 to 8 would benefit from the 35 per cent CONTTA adjustment and hazard allowance.Staff on salary levels 9 to 15 are expected to receive the 35 per cent CONTTA increase, hazard allowance and excess workload allowance.

For officers on salary levels 13 to 15, the package includes the 35 per cent CONTTA increase, hazard allowance, excess workload allowance and responsibility allowance.

The union also disclosed that a uniform allowance had been introduced for staff whose duties require the use of uniforms, including laboratory, farm, workshop, studio and health centre personnel.

The union also disclosed that the proposed agreement would take effect from January 2026, similar to arrangements earlier granted to academic unions.

It added that negotiations had also secured the introduction of excess workload allowances for senior non-teaching staff on CONTISS salary levels 9 to 12 and 13 to 15.

According to the communiqué, all approved allowances under the proposed agreement will be non-taxable.

SSANU said the gains were achieved through ongoing renegotiation talks between the union and the Federal Government, adding that members extensively reviewed the progress made by the negotiating committee during the meeting.

The union leadership commended members nationwide for their support and compliance during the recent industrial action, describing the level of solidarity shown across branches as a demonstration of unity and commitment to the welfare of non-teaching staff.

“Considering the progress made so far, it was unanimously agreed that SSANU has secured a better offer which can be improved in the near future,” the communiqué stated.

The union noted that the final agreement template was being prepared by the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission (NSIWC) ahead of the signing of the 2026 SSANU/Federal Government Agreement.

However, SSANU stressed that all the proposed benefits remained subject to the approval of President Bola Tinubu, the Federal Government negotiating committee and the Joint Action Committee (JAC) of NASU and SSANU.

The union expressed optimism that the ongoing negotiations would result in improved welfare packages for non-teaching staff across federal universities.
