ABUJA, Nigeria – Following the recent observance of International Workers’ Day, the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu-led Federal Government is set to declare another two-day public holiday in late May 2026 to mark the Eid-al-Adha (Eid-el-Kabir) celebrations.
The upcoming holidays offer Nigerians a crucial opportunity to decompress and observe one of the most significant festivals in the Islamic calendar.
Eid-al-Adha 2026: Expected Dates
The 2026 Eid-al-Adha celebration is expected to fall on either Wednesday, May 27, or Thursday, May 28, 2026.
As is traditional, the final dates will depend on the sighting of the lunar moon and the subsequent formal declaration by the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar III, who serves as the President-General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA).
Barring any changes to the lunar calendar, the Federal Government is anticipated to declare at least two consecutive weekdays as public holidays to allow for the “Festival of Sacrifice.”
Palliatives and Support for Citizens
In preparation for the festivities, First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu has already commenced a massive support initiative. On April 30, 2026, she flagged off the distribution of 100 trucks of rice and ₦1.2 billion in palliative support.
This intervention is aimed at vulnerable households across the 19 northern states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) to ensure that the spirit of compassion and sacrifice associated with the season reaches those most in need.
Workers’ Day Recap
This announcement follows the Federal Government’s declaration of Friday, May 1, 2026, as a public holiday for Workers’ Day. The administration continues to emphasize its commitment to worker welfare and national reforms aimed at long-term sustainable benefits for all Nigerians.
Tips for Planning Your May Break
With multiple holidays occurring in a single month, citizens are advised to:
- Monitor Official Bulletins: Keep an eye on the Ministry of Interior for the official signing of the holiday circular.
- Travel Early: If traveling for the Eid festivals, book transport in advance as demand typically spikes during the two-day window.
- Banking Transactions: Complete essential financial tasks before the midweek break to avoid delays.
