Gunmen Kill Teacher, Abduct Scores of Students in Borno Border Community

A teacher has been killed while scores of students were abducted after suspected gunmen attacked Government Day Secondary School in Lassa, Askira/Uba Local Government Area of Borno State.

The attack occurred on Monday morning in Lassa, a border community between Borno and Adamawa states.

A resident of the community and Special Adviser to the Adamawa State Governor on Media and Strategy, Mr Solomon Kwamagar, confirmed the incident, saying the attackers stormed the area on motorcycles before invading the school.

According to him, the assailants arrived on the town’s market day, passing through the busy market before launching the attack.

“They came through the market on motorcycles and headed straight to Government Day Secondary School, Lassa. They shot and killed one teacher and abducted all the students who were in their classrooms,” Kwamagar said.

He noted that Lassa is predominantly inhabited by the Margi ethnic group, whose members live across both Borno and Adamawa states.

Kwamagar, who hails from Lassa but resides in Madagali Local Government Area of Adamawa State, said efforts were ongoing to determine the exact number of students and teachers taken away by the attackers.

“I’m still making contacts to ascertain the total number of students and teachers who were kidnapped from the school,” he added.

Efforts to obtain official confirmation from security authorities were unsuccessful, as the spokesperson for the Adamawa State Police Command, SP Suleiman Nguroje, could not be reached when contacted.

The latest attack has heightened concerns over insecurity in communities along the Borno-Adamawa border, where armed groups have continued to target schools and civilians despite ongoing military operations in the North-East.

Security agencies had yet to issue an official statement on the incident as of the time of filing this report.
