Yobe State has received a pressing call to establish psychiatric hospitals to address the mental health needs of its residents, as highlighted by concerned citizen Mohammed Bukar Gaje.
In a statement on Wednesday, Gaje emphasized the necessity of creating a psychiatric hospital to accommodate the increasing number of individuals grappling with mental health issues in the state. Recent studies have revealed that over 11% of Yobe’s population is affected by various forms of mental illness.
Gaje expressed dismay over the absence of a dedicated psychiatric facility in Yobe, citing the detrimental effects of this deficiency on individuals with mental health challenges.
He outlined the repercussions, including untreated suffering, potential homelessness, incarceration, decreased productivity, higher absenteeism, and elevated crime rates within the state.
Highlighting the urgency of the situation, Gaje urged the state government to prioritize the establishment of a psychiatric hospital as a crucial step towards enhancing the overall health and well-being of Yobe citizens.
